I also looked at some seriously high-end ones from Objet. It's not without its quirks - especially if solid walls lie exactly on the X/Y axes - you get a double wall with an airgap (I guess that's what a rounding error looks like in 3D?).

I looked at the Makerbots and Replicator 2x, but it seemed like the easiest to work with was the UP Plus 2. Out of curiosity, what 3D Printer did you get, Tonio? I confess that I've not yet just tried this, but I wanted to understand just what was going on in case there are other problems with the 3D printing. Put another way, for this example, do I have to combine the cube and the cone (eg via Import Children), to make a single mesh? Or somehow eliminate mesh elements to simplify the mesh ready for 3D printing? If I now export this as an STL, does the STL export all those "hidden" polys on the underside of the cone, or does it, in effect, export just an outer "bounding mesh" that encloses the outer volume of the cube and the code? There will be radial polys on the underside of the cone in contact with the top poly of the cube. There is one question that has been niggling away at me - imagine, say, a cube with the underside of a cone snapped to the top poly of the cube. That being said, I am looking forward to a more robust boolean tool kit in the future, as well as more modeling tools, including a real loft function. This has made the booleans far more reliable and I really did appreciate Martin's quick response. I submitted some of the boolean errors that were occurring, to Martin and in his usual gracious fashion he was able to squash a couple of bugs in one of the mid version 5 updates.

All of this makes the 3D printer software go nuts as you might expect, as it can't tolerate objects that are not perfectly clean and completely closed. I would get the occasional missing or open triangle section somewhere, or some odd or stray points making connections where they were not welcome. And I suck at modeling so someone with your abilities would be running through build material like crazy!įinally, the challenges I had (and Martin helped to reduce) were the errors that were occurring when taking a lot of extruded text and intricate logo work and fusing it to other objects using the "Union" boolean function, which again, is required to make the "Airtight" solids that 3D printers require.
Seeing your models come to life and become useful pieces is a serious drug.

Happy to lend my thoughts, but they are rather sparse simply because I have had so little trouble with the STL file translation to the 3D Printer.īasically, whatever you model, just needs to be truly "airtight", as well as being a single, closed, boolean, polygon object prior to saving as an STL.Īs long as the object is free of any undesirable geometric anomalies, it will print beautifully and without issue.Īnd yes, 3D printing is not only tempting, it's addictive.
